From the Iola Register

Elsmore native is among 'Gilligan's Island' hopefuls
By RICHARD LUKEN
Register Reporter

Those who sit right back to hear a tale of a fateful trip about the SS Minnow and its crew will see a familiar face in the process.

Elsmore native Amanda Dodson, 21, is one of two contestants vying for the role of Mary Ann on a reality television version of the 1960s show "Gilligan's Island."

"The Real Gilligan's Island" premiers Nov. 30 on Superstation TBS, channel 29 for Iola cable television subscribers.

The new version features two contestants vying for each of the seven castaway rolls: Gilligan, the Skipper, the millionaire and his wife, the movie star, the professor and Mary Ann.

The castaways were split into two teams that compete in various challenges inspired by plots from the original series, which ran from 1964 to 1967.

The newest version was filmed earlier this fall in a secret location in the Gulf of Mexico.

Because of secrecy surrounding the project, Dodson was prohibited from discussing her participation until the rosters were announced publicly by TBS.

Even now, she can't say much about her competition; including whether she or her team won the competitions.

"She can't even discuss it with us," her mother, Katy Sander, said with a laugh. "It ought to be interesting."

The other contestant for the role of Mary Ann is Kate Koth, a 21-year-old farm girl from Manchester, Mo. As an aside, Kate's mother, Janet Kauth, was a participant in the CBS series "Survivor."

Because Mary Ann's character was a midwestern farm girl, the two contestants for the reality version had to be farm girls.

Dodson, the daughter of Tim and Katy Sander of rural Elsmore, certainly fits the bill.

"She seems to find all kinds of things that interest her," Katy Sander said, from snowboarding to barrell racing or working with cattle.

Dodson, a Marmaton Valley High School graduate, attends Wichita State University and is studying to become a dental hygienist.

Other castaway hopefuls include supermodels Rachel Hunter and Nicole Eggert, competing for the role of Ginger.

The first of many twists and the identities of the castaways have been revealed for the new reality series The Real Gilligan's Island on TBS, television's "very funny" network. The series, in which two sets of castaways who personify the original Gilligan's Island characters are stranded on an island and challenged to find a way off, is executive-produced by Mike Fleiss (The Bachelor). The father/son team of Sherwood Schwartz, the creator of the original Gilligan's Island sitcom, and Lloyd J. Schwartz also serve as executive producers. Lisa Levenson (The Bachelor, The Bachelorette) and Scott Jeffress (The Bachelor, The Bachelorette) serve as co-executive producers for Next Entertainment. Hosted by Scott Lasky, The Real Gilligan's Island will air on TBS Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8 p.m. (ET/PT), setting sail with a special two-hour premiere Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).
